Abstract

An ontology for the encoding of multilingual and multipresentational dictionaries This redefines several terms from GOLD to get rid of some inconsistencies and provides the missing glueing bits for describing the meanings, expressions and representations of linguistic signs.

signc back to ToC or Class ToC

IRI: http://purl.org/linguistics/gold/LinguisticSign

A linguistic sign may be anything that is a somewhat fixed part of a language: words, phrases, idioms etc. More formally it is a combination of the shape or form (letters or sounds - but only the idea of them, not the actual expression of sounds; this side is also called the signifier) and a concept that the shape is connected to arbitrarily (the signified). This is the Saussurian view of it. Practically you can say that a sign may have several different spellings which may be written in different scripts and several different ways of pronouncing it (in different accents). Of course one sign can also have several different meanings. Within the context of this ontology however a sign is defined to be restricted to be the unique combination of spellings, pronunciations and meanings that relate to each other. So if different meanings of a sign would have the same spelling but different pronunciations or if one spelling would be pronounced different than another then you would need several signs for describing this situation. Example: 'colour' is a British spelling and therefore normally pronounced with a British accent while 'color' is an American spelling pronounced with an American accent. You could therefore have one sign in British English and another in American English.
